Property taxes are one of the biggest recurring costs of owning a rental. 🏠
RentRedi has partnered with Ownwell, a property tax appeal service, so you can see if your properties may be overassessed and start a professional appeal right from your RentRedi dashboard.
There's no upfront cost to check your savings or to start an appeal. Ownwell is only paid if it successfully lowers your property tax bill.
What is Ownwell?
Ownwell is a property tax appeal company whose local tax experts handle the entire appeal process for you, including:
Evaluation: Ownwell reviews your property against recent sales and local market data to see if it's been overassessed.
Filing: Ownwell files all of the paperwork with your county assessor or appraisal district.
Evidence preparation: Ownwell builds the case for a lower assessed value.
Hearing: If a hearing is needed, Ownwell represents you and negotiates with the county.
Ownwell also keeps monitoring your property in future years to help make sure you aren't overassessed again.
How much does it cost?
Checking your estimated savings in RentRedi is free, and there's no upfront fee to start an appeal.
Ownwell charges a contingency fee only if your appeal succeeds. The fee is a percentage of your actual property tax savings for the year Ownwell appeals, and the percentage varies by region.
For example, if the fee is 25% and your tax bill drops from $5,000 to $4,000, the fee applies only to the $1,000 you saved, for a total of $250. If your bill isn't reduced, you pay nothing.
Ownwell sets and bills its own fee directly. You can review the pricing for your area when you sign up with Ownwell.
Savings amounts in RentRedi are estimates, not a guarantee. Your actual outcome depends on your appeal and your local taxing authority. Ownwell is a third-party service, and its terms apply once you continue to its site.
Where to find your property tax savings
RentRedi checks your properties automatically when you add them, so there's nothing to set up. Estimates refresh about once a week.
If at least one of your properties may qualify for savings, you'll see a Property Tax Appeals card on your Insights page, and on your RentRedi dashboard if you're part of the dashboard beta. The card shows:
Your total estimated savings across your portfolio
How many properties may qualify for an appeal
If none of your properties are eligible, the card won't appear.
How to start a property tax appeal
Follow the steps below to start an appeal with Ownwell: 👇
From your RentRedi dashboard, find the Property Tax Appeals card.
Click Start Tax Appeals to open your savings estimate.
Review each property's address and estimated savings. Properties Ownwell doesn't currently cover may be listed separately for your reference.
Check the box next to each property you'd like to appeal. You can choose one property or several.
Click Continue to appeal.
Once your link is ready, Ownwell opens in a new tab with only the properties you selected.
Follow Ownwell's steps to finish signing up. Ownwell may ask you to complete a short property survey or upload supporting documents, such as recent photos or repair estimates.
Done! ✅ Ownwell's team will take it from here.
Important note: Property tax savings estimates are currently in beta (Beta feature), so not every account has access yet. Estimates only appear for eligible properties.
What happens after I start an appeal?
Ownwell will email you when it submits your appeal, when it receives a decision from your county, and when it sends any billing notifications.
Appeal timelines depend on your county's schedule, so some appeals are resolved within weeks, and others take several months. Your appeal status in RentRedi updates about once a day.
Frequently asked questions
Why don't I see the Property Tax Appeals card?
A few things can cause this:
Your properties aren't eligible right now. The card only appears when at least one property has estimated savings.
Ownwell doesn't serve your area yet. Ownwell currently works in select states and zip codes.
Your account isn't in the beta yet. Property tax savings are still in beta, and access is expanding over time.
Your property address is incomplete or incorrect. Estimates rely on an accurate address. See Update Your Property Address.
How accurate is the savings estimate?
Your estimate is based on local market data and your county's tax rate. It's a helpful starting point, not a guarantee. Ownwell's experts review each property in more detail before filing, and your final savings depend on your county's decision.
I clicked Continue to appeal, but nothing opened.
Ownwell opens in a new tab once your link is ready, so give it a moment. If nothing opens, your browser may be blocking pop-ups. Allow pop-ups for app.rentredi.com and try again.
Can an appeal raise my property taxes?
In most states, there's no risk to filing an appeal. In a few states, a review can reopen your property's valuation. Ownwell can explain the rules for your county before you move forward.
What information does RentRedi share with Ownwell?
When you continue to Ownwell, only the properties you selected are sent over so Ownwell can start your appeal.
Who should I contact with questions about my appeal?
For questions about your appeal status, fees, or hearings, contact Ownwell directly. For questions about the Property Tax Appeals card or anything else in the app, contact RentRedi Support.
Is this tax advice?
No. RentRedi and Ownwell's estimates are for informational purposes. For questions about your specific tax situation, please talk with a tax professional.
