Want to make sure late rent is handled automatically — without chasing tenants every month? With RentRedi, you can set up auto-late fees!
Note: Late fees are applied each morning when rent is late — not immediately when a payment is returned or when you first set up the auto-late fee rules.
Take the tour, and we'll walk you through it!
Or, follow the steps below!
Step 1: Navigate to your Late Fee Rules page
From your RentRedi dashboard, type “late fee” in the search bar.
Click Late Fee Rules from the results.
Step 2: Setting up your Late Fee Rule
In your Late Fee Rules page, click +Add Rule.
You can apply the rule to all properties and units, or choose a specific property or unit.
Save as: Choose how you’d like late fees to be displayed and recorded.
Max Late Fee (Total): Some leases, states, or municipalities have a maximum late fee that is allowed. Use this box to set a maximum, if applicable.
Apply for: Select the charge type you want your late fee rule to apply to. By default, this is set to Rental Income, which is used for rent charges.
You can also choose other income types, such as HOA Fee Income, Parking Income, Miscellaneous Income, or any category that matches the types of charges you want late fees to apply to.Days rent is late: Refers to the grace period and whether it is measured by Day, Week, or Month. The grace period is the amount of time to wait before the first late fee is applied. This is typically set by day, but you can also choose week or month if your grace period is longer.
Late Fee (1st time): Set the first late fee amount and choose whether it should be charged as a flat dollar amount ($) or as a percentage (%) of the original charge amount. This is the first late fee that will be applied to the rent charge (or other applicable charge type) once the grace period ends.
Late Fee (recurring): Set the recurring late fee amount if your lease includes an ongoing fee after the initial late fee is applied. This fee will be charged daily, weekly, or monthly for each period the payment remains past due.
Note: Recurring late fees will continue to accrue until the charge in RentRedi is fully paid. If you do not charge a recurring late fee, you may leave this field blank.
+ Add Additional Rule (Optional): You can now stack multiple late fee rules. Click “+ Add Additional Rule” to create tiered late fees (for example, 5% for days 1–5, then 10% starting on day 6).
Click Save Rule when finished!
Done!🎉
Tip: 💡
For each rule you create, the Late Fee Preview will display a clear summary of how that rule is configured. It will show when the late fee first takes effect, the amount of the initial and/or recurring fee, and the schedule for when each fee is applied. This helps you quickly review and confirm your late fee structure before saving.
